 Yazidi massacre survivor was shot in the neck, the shoulder, causing him to fall into the grave alongside other bodies.LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online): Speaking to the press under an assumed name, the survivor described how ISIS overran their town last year. All the Yazidi men were herded into a school, where ISIS troops inspected their underarm hair to determine their age. Anyone older than 10 years of age was to be forced to convert to Islam - or be killed. Yazidi women and girls were put on one side of the hall, to be taken away to be used as sex slaves. The "men," along with many young boys were split into two groups, those willing to convert or those who would retain their original faith. The Christians were promised that they would be taken to the Sinjar Mountains and freed. It was all a horrible lie: Herded into trucks, the men were taken to killing fields around the village of Kojo, northern Iraq. They were then forced to stand by mass graves and executed. Khalaf, the survivor told how he was one of 800 men shot at, but survived. Too frightened to move or even breathe, Khalaf (his assumed name for the purpose of this article) said that he lay covered in blood from other victims, as freshly shot dead bodies fell on top of him. Khalaf's two brothers were murdered. His two nephews lived by laying in the grave for hours while soldiers walked along checking for survivors. A man lying next to him was found by an ISIS fighter to still be breathing, so he was shot three times in the head. The 42-year-old survivor says, "They [ISIS] took everybody to the big school inside Kojo. They took everything from us - telephones, money, gold." The Yazidi were at one time a thriving sect that lived in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia. But successive waves of persecution by the Ottoman Turkish rulers of what is now Iraq, by Saddam Hussein and now by Islamic militants, have reduced the number of Yazidi from millions to an estimated 700,000.
