Nasrallah makes rare public appearance

(UPI) -- In a rare public appearance Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Israel "is the tool of the U.S. against Arabs and Muslims," and called on Muslims to unite.

"The U.S. administration is the one occupying the Palestinian territories. It is responsible for the detention and displacement of hundreds of Palestinians," nowlebanon.com quoted Nasrallah as telling thousands gathered to commemorate Ashura in Beirut Tuesday. Lebanese media said it was the first time Nasrallah, who lives in a bunker to avoid assassination, had appeared in public since 2008.

Ashura is a holy day for Shiite Muslims and marks the anniversary of the death of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson, Hussein, in the Battle of Karbala in A.D. 680.

"Israel is the tool of the U.S. against the Arabs and Muslims. It is America's spearhead against Arabs and Muslims," the Web site quoted him saying. The Hezbollah leader also warned of Israel's attempts to build "thousands of settlements" in Jerusalem, saying Israel is taking advantage of unrest in Arab countries to achieve its goals.

"It is the dream of every single one of us to join the master martyrs of the entire resistance," the Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Nasrallah as saying.

After speaking to the crowd, surrounded by bodyguards, Nasrallah left the stadium but promised to continue speaking to the crowd via video-link, the Hezbollah al-Manar satellite television station said.
