More932Ali Bashar, a 22-year-old Iraqi migrant who raped and murdered 14-year-old Susannah Feldman, has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison by a German court in Wiesbaden.Although the migrant had taken responsibility for the murder, he continued to claim that the girl had consented to have intercourse with him.
The judge presiding over the case said that Ali Bashar had “voiced no sincere word of regret”, and had shown “neither remorse nor empathy” for killing the teenage girl, reports Nyheter Idag.
The judge described the accused as being guilty of “coldblooded murder” and deemed his crime to be of “exceptional severity”.
In a separate case, Ali is accused of having raped an 11-year-old girl in Germany repeatedly. He has also been linked to a robbery that took place on April 2018.
The 22-year-old Iraqi migrant had first come to Germany as an asylum seeker in October 2015 but had his application rejected the following year. After appealing the decision, Ali was able to stay in Germany until the next decision.
Ali would eventually get to know the victim through his younger brother.
In May of 2018, he met the 14-year-old girl in a wooded area in Wiesbaden, in western Germany, where they both lived. After assaulting her and raping her, Bashar strangled Feldman to death before burying her small body in a shallow grave.
Just after the brutal murder, Bashar then used the victim’s phone to text her mother, pretending as if the young girl had run off to Paris with another man.
Two weeks later, the girl’s body was discovered in the woods close to the refugee residence where Bashar lived. It was later found that she had been bludgeoned to death.
After the murder, Bashar was able to squirm his way back to Iraq with several family members. Fortunately, however, in a joint operation conducted days after the girl’s body was found, Kurdish security forces arrested the 22-year-old in Northern Iraq and handed him over to German commandos who then brought him back to Europe to face justice.
The psychiatrist who evaluated Bashar testified to the court that Ali had a serious personality disorder which makes him manipulative and to focus only on his own needs. The expert witness also commented on the Iraqi view of women which is culturally incompatible with how western culture views women.
The high profile murder has led to a great deal of anger in Germany and has come to symbolize the great failure of Angela Merkel’s asylum policy.
The case also raised important questions surrounding the failure of the German police to act until five days after Susanna disappeared, how Bashar and his family were reportedly able to flee the country using fake identities, and why he was allowed to stay in Germany after his asylum application failed two years prior.
