Trump: No child, no teacher, should ever be in danger in an American school - اقتباس :
President Donald Trump addresses Wednesday's mass shooting at a South Florida High School from the White House on Thursday. (Evan Vucci/AP) President Donald Trump offered condolences and called for the nation to come together "as one American family" on Thursday, a day after a deadly shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, took the lives of 17 people and sent more than a dozen others to hospital. "To every parent, teacher and child who is hurting so badly, we are here for you, whatever you need, whatever we can do, to ease your pain," he said Thursday at the White House. "We are all joined together as one American family and your suffering is our burden also." Trump said that he is making plans to travel to Parkland to oversee coordination of the federal response to the shooting, and said addressing the spate of violence would be "our top priority" at a meeting with governors later this month. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control advocacy group, there have been 291 school shootings since 2013, and 18 in the first 45 days of of 2018 alone. "No child, no teacher, should ever be in danger in an American school," Trump said. "It is not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference, we must actually make that difference." He did not offer any details on what policies his administration might support to meet that goal. On Twitter earlier Thursday, Trump blamed the shooting on the alleged perpetrator's fellow students and others for failing to report their concerns. "So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!" Trump tweeted. At a press conference Thursday morning, Florida Gov. Rick Scott said he plans to begin "real conversations" with Tallahassee lawmakers on "how do we make sure individuals with mental illness do not touch a gun." In February 2017, Congress passed legislation repealing an Obama-era rule intended to bar people with certain mental illnesses from being able to legally purchase firearms. Alleged shooter Nikolas Cruz, 19, was charged Thursday morning with 17 counts of premeditated murder after Wednesday's assault, the deadliest school shooting since the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012. Fourteen people were hospitalized with injuries from gunfire. Officials told the Associated Press that Cruz legally purchased the AR-15 rifle he is accused of using to mow down his former classmates and teachers about a year ago. Students believed the school was holding a drill after Cruz reportedly pulled a fire alarm at the school; police say Cruz, donning a gas mask, threw smoke grenades and then fired at fleeing students and staff. According to Buzzfeed News, the creator of a YouTube video notified the FBI in September after someone named Nikolas Cruz wrote "Im going to be a professional school shooter" in the comments of one of the video. Cruz had been expelled from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for his behavior, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed. Authorities have declined so far to offer details on his motivation, but students have described someone whose strange behavior ended friendships. One student, junior Victoria Olvera, told the AP that Cruz had been expelled after getting in a fight with an ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, and that he had been abusive to the girlfriend. According to the Sun Sentinel, Cruz had been living with a friend's family for the past several months after his mother died in November of pneumonia. His adopted father had died several years ago of a heart attack. |
